Attitude can affect how you perceive yourself, your goals, and your college education. It’s important to be aware of what affects your attitude and mindset and to determine what encourages positive thinking and decreases negative thinking.

  • Assess the effects of positive and negative thinking on your approach and agency to work
  • Foster a growth mindset
  • Understand what impacts your motivation and success

Questions for Reflection

  • What has brought you to Stanford? What are your academic goals and interests?
  • Where do you see yourself after graduating from Stanford?
  • How do you perceive and celebrate accomplishments?
  • How do you approach and confront challenges or failures?
  • Do you find yourself getting stuck in thinking traps?
  • What campus resources do you use to support your studies and goals?
  • Who would be your ideal mentor as you pursue your goals?

Basic Strategies to Try

  • Keep a list of your goals and break them down into manageable steps. Track your progress and celebrate successes. 
  • Meet regularly with your academic advisor to review your academic plan and progress. 
  • Join organizations or clubs that align with your interests.  
  • Create a self-script to facilitate adaptive thinking.
  • Practice mindfulness exercises to center yourself.
  • Maintain a healthy balance of activities. Make time for exercise, hobbies, or other activities you enjoy. 
  • Choose an accountability partner. Discuss your goals, share support, and check in with each other regularly.   
  • Reflect on your motivations and how they affect your perspective.
